Needle felting .
If you want to start from the very beginning; find a sheep farmer and buy the wool from him. First the wool has to be cut in manageable pieces, and then washed, dried, colored and carded. It takes time, both the procedure and learning about water temperature, tumble drying etc. Easier then to buy dyed and carded wool, and it is also smoother to work with. A foam plate is essential to save tables and body from the very sharp needles. Some of my figures have a body wire or pipe cleaners as a base, in order to make it easier to bend and shape them.
